Secondary Schools in Lagos Gear up for PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge 2018 

Nigeria’s number one pure science competition, PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge (PZCCC) competition has commenced registration for its 5^th edition. The competition which is an initiative of the PZ Cussons foundation and supported by some of its premium brands; Premier and Nunu Milk, is designed to promote the study of chemistry through open competition amongst public and private secondary schools in Lagos.

Since its inception in 2013 the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge has grown from barely over 800 students entering the competition to 3000 in 2017 being its most successful edition.

In a statement issued by the company to announcement PZCCC 2018, the Executive Director for Brand Development & Activation, Christos Giouras said that the continuous increase in the number of participants each year was a testament to the fact that the objectives of the competition was being achieved. “Our main objective with the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge is to stimulate and inspire the learning of Chemistry among students and raise their IQ, while demonstrating the relevance of chemistry in our society. To see how the competition has grown over the years is very inspiring, and we are indeed pleased to be kicking off the 5^th season. As part of our growth process we have increased the stakes this year, the overall winner will receive a prize money of N1m amongst other prizes for the schools, the teachers aren’t left out as well” he said.

The competition is divided into four stages and is quite tasking, as it has been designed to challenge the IQ of contestants; the general tests, practical tests and then the live quiz, only successful contestants from each of the stages progress and eventually the best six will battle it out at the final to produce the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge Champion for 2018.

According to PZ Cussons, the overall top three winners will receive “a trophy, a medal and N1, 000,000, N750, 000, and N500, 000 respectively. Additional prizes also include laboratory equipments for the schools and teachers who came out tops in the Teacher’s Aptitude Test segment.

Schools in Lagos are advised to take advantage of this platform to also encourage the study of science, particularly Chemistry thereby inspiring the junior ones to pick interest in the study of Chemistry across all secondary schools. Interested students and schools are required to register online at www.pzchemistrychallenge.com. Entry closes on Friday, 16 March 2018. Science enthusiasts and the general public can also take part in the online chemistry challenge and stand the chance to also win exciting prizes.

The 2018 edition promises a lot more excitement and engagement as Premier and Nunu Milk will be on ground to provide the needed support for the competition and participants.

PZ Cussons Nigeria Foundation has been helping Nigerian communities by supporting projects in the areas of education, potable water, health and empowerment. The Foundation has completed over 58 projects in different parts of the country after the launch in 2007.

Sinn Fein has released documents that it says show the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) reneged on a deal that would have restored power-sharing in Northern Ireland.

The nationalist party said an agreement had been reached at the end of last week following months of negotiations to restore the Stormont government, which collapsed in January 2017.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald said the parties had reached “an accommodation across the issues involved”, including plans for an Irish Language Act to boost the legal status of Gaelic– a move strongly opposed by many DUP supporter.s

It comes amid the on-going fallout over who was responsible for the talks collapsing on Wednesday. Negotiations were halted after DUP leader Arlene Foster issued a statement saying there was “currently no prospect” of a solution.

However, Sinn Fein has now claimed a deal had in fact been agreed in principle last week.  In addition to new laws placing Gaelic on the same legal footing as English, it said the agreement would also have resulted in an act to protect Ulster Scots and a third piece of legislation on respecting language and diversity. 

Sinn Fein said no consensus was reached on the issue of same-sex marriage, which the DUP has blocked despite a majority of Northern Irish assembly members supporting it, but that the parties had agreed to set up a committee to look at the possibility of a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland.

Ms McDonald said: “The DUP leader brought this phase of negotiations to a close and said ‘there is no current prospect of these discussions leading to an Executive being formed’.

"It is up to Arlene Foster to explain this given that the DUP and Sinn Fein leaderships had achieved an accommodation across the issues involved.”

She added: “We had a draft agreement by the end of last week. At that time we advised the DUP leadership that the deal should be closed before those opposed to it could unpick what we had achieved.

"We made it clear that if there was a delay there was every chance that the package would unravel.

In a detailed documentary movie which showed the true accounts of the life time of the forgotten hero of India's independence it was discovered that the militant politician was a thorn in the flesh of the colonial masters ,Britain at the time in history.

In about three hours of movie watched by this reporter from his family's Areeba Country Home ,Off Missions Street at Ikuehi-Ihima ,Okehi Local Government Area,Kogi state at the heart of Nigeria's Midlands ,while on vacation  recently via StarTimes Satellite Television Channel ,ZeeWorld ,it was noted that the Indian freedom fighter was a political associate of the much elderly Mahatma Gandhi but both had to sever political ties on account of differences in political ideology.

It was gathered in the movie that Bose had gone into a hunger strike while fighting for India's independence from Prison in Calcutta,India.

This reporter discovered that Bose later fell on a much bigger plan which was to make him leave his home land for Russia through Afghanistan in search of help for a resistance to colonialism.

Checks showed that when the British government got informed that Bose had escaped from their watch in his home ,nationwide manhunt was laid out for him.

In the movie ,at some point the Hindi Castro had to turn to Adolf Hitler'sGermany whom he courted and won his friendship when Russia rejected his overtures for support for India's Independence.

Bose,the fighter later made the long trip from Germany to Indonesia via a sub marine and met with other like minds to work under the banner of The Indian Independence League and the Indian National Army to fight the British colonialists at the time.

A German lady who served him in his office as scribe and whom he married had a daughter for him prior to taking up arms to declare a full blown war against the British government with the help of foreign allies .

Bose was the de facto head of the Indian Government in Exile in his time as a Guerrilla fighter.

New Delhi: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s daughter Dr Anita Bose Pfaff wants a DNA test to be conducted to establish whether the ashes kept in a Japanese temple are her father’s, but believes that the 1945 aircrash in Taipei was the “most likely cause” of his death.

“I believe that the plane crash is the most likely cause of his death,” Pfaff said when asked whether she believes in the theory that her father died in an air crash near the Taihoku aerodrome in Taipei on 18 August 1945.

However, she said she wants a DNA test of the ashes kept in an urn at a Buddhist temple in Tokyo to ascertain whether the remains belong to the freedom fighter.

“A DNA test could provide proof, provided that the bones are not too badly charred for extracting DNA,” Pfaff, the only child of Subhash Bose and Emilie Schenkl, told PTI in an interview from her home in Stadtbergen, Germany.

Bose family sources said the 73-year old German economist, who is likely to visit India next month, may urge the Indian government to talk to Japan for conducting DNA test of the remains kept in the Renkoji temple in Tokyo.

On whether the recently declassified documents sufficiently proved Netaji’s death in the aircrash, Pfaff said “while I have only looked at a few files, I get the impression that a death certificate is not contained.”

Asked about her opinion that Bose was not treated with as much respect as were leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, Pfaff said: “That certainly seems to be the case for the official treatment. “But the general public, the so-called man in the street, however, seem to have kept his memory alive in a very touching way. It was a shame how the Indian government treated the INA veterans for decades.”

To a question about Nehru’s approach towards Bose, she merely said, “Since their relationship lasted over many years, it was multi-faceted, I imagine. In many aspects they held similar views, in others their views differed.”

Asked about her reaction to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s recent remark that Netaji’s death has been used for “petty politics”, Pfaff said, “On the part of some people this is true, according to my opinion. “However, many of his relatives such as my uncles and my mother very genuinely wished that he might have survived the crash or not been in it. Their love for him made the acceptance of his death too hard to bear.”

Reacting to the declassification of Netaji files by the Centre and West Bengal government and whether these documents would help solve the mystery behind the legendary freedom fighter’s “disappearance”, she said was “indeed happy”. “It was high time. Most likely we shall find out that for 90% of the files there has been no reason whatsoever not to declassify them decades ago. I rather doubt that the declassified files will reveal anything very spectacular about my father’s death,” she said.

She said she agreed with the view that declassification should have been done much earlier. On whether Netaji’s birthday should be declared a national holiday, she said, “I believe there are better ways of keeping Netaji’s memory alive than a national holiday.”

On whether she has any plan to pen a book on her father, she said, “I did not have the good fortune to know him personally beyond the age of four weeks. I cannot say much about him. But together with my niece and other women in our family, I have plans to write a book about my mother.”

Anita, a former Professor of Economics at the University of Augsburg, is married to Prof Martin Pfaff, who was a member of German Parliament Bundestag, representing the SPD or the Social Democratic Party. They have three children — Peter Arun, Thomas Krishna and Maya Carina. PTI
