Presidential Election 2020: Joe Biden elected 46th President of the US

Joe Biden: 290
Donald Trump: 214

Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States, promising to be: "A President who seeks not to divide, but to unify. Who doesn’t see Red and Blue states, but a United States."

- Attorney General William Barr has called on federal prosecutors to examine allegations of vote fraud before the final results are certified. To date, there is absolutely no evidence to support the claim

- Today the US Supreme Court will hear Republican arguments to strike down the Obamacare healthcare law, even as Joe Biden prepares to replace Trump in January.

- Joe Biden stresses mask wearing and warns of  "very dark winter".

- President Elect offers optimistic caution on covid-19 vaccine breakthrough: "I congratulate the brilliant women and men who helped produce this breakthrough and to give us such cause for hope."

- Biden - Harris team launch @Transition46 Twitter account. Trump says it's far from over, refuses to concede and sites unspecified pending lawsuits.

Congratulations pour in for Joe Biden, President-elect. Including cautious commendation from Barack Obama, who said "Enjoy this moment. Then stay engaged".

-Trump's fellow Republicans split between supporting his refusal to concede or congratulating Democrats' win, Mitch McConnell claims: "President Trump is 100% within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities."

- Wall Street rallies after Pfizer vaccine statement.

Obamacare goes before the Supreme Court today

President Elect Joe Biden will give a speech today, expressing his support for the healthcare programme known as 'Obamacare' as it is discussed in the Supreme Court. Healthcare was a big part of Biden's campaign as America struggles to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and he was serving as Vice President when the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) was passed.

Obamacare also went before the Court eight years ago and it was decided that the main components should remain. However changes to the Supreme Court made during the Trump administration (most recently, the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett) have resulted in a 6-3 split in favour of Republican Justices. Biden will be desperate to ensure that it is not overturned before he takes office in January.

International election observers criticise Trump for “baseless allegations”

report produced by the Organisation of American States (OAS) has found that election day voting “progressed in a peaceful manner” and was “well-organised.”  The OAS' inspectors attended polling stations and counting centres in Georgia, Michigan, Iowa, Maryland and the District of Columbia, finding no evidence of electoral fraud.

The report goes on to criticise Donald Trump for spreading “baseless allegations of systemic deficiencies". In a rather pointed reference to the President, the OAS calls on candidates to "act responsibly by presenting and arguing legitimate claims before the courts, not unsubstantiated or harmful speculation in the public media.”

Team Trump tells staffers they have “just one week left”

The President has so far maintained that he intends to fight the result of last week's election and is pursuing legal options in a number of states where he lost to Joe Biden. Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Guiliani gave a speech over the weekend claiming that they have filed a number of lawsuits but reports suggest that they have already began to shed staff from their campaign team.

Yahoo News has reported that a number of Team Trump staffers have been told they they are being let go. “They just laid off people,” one campaign aide told Yahoo News. Some staffers have been told to expect their "last paycheck” next week and that they have “just one week left.”

Biden: "many more months" before covid-19 vaccine is widely available

Joe Biden's election campaign drew heavily on the former Vice President's promises to focus on the fight against coronavirus, and he got some good news just two days after being named the victor.

On Monday drug manufacturers Pfizer announced that trial showed that their covid-19 vaccine had a 90% success rate and is expected to be given full approval in the near future. However there are still some pretty sizeable logistical issues to be addressed and Biden made clear in a statement that coronavirus remains a threat.

"I congratulate the brilliant women and men who helped produce this breakthrough and to give us such cause for hope", he said.

"At the same time, it is also important to understand that the end of the battle against COVID-19 is still months away. This news follows a previously announced timeline by industry officials that forecast vaccine approval by late November. Even if that is achieved, and some Americans are vaccinated later this year, it will be many more months before there is widespread vaccination in this country."

US covid-19 hospitalizations surge to record of just over 59,000 patients

There were just over 59,000 covid-19 patients in hospitals across the United States on Monday, the country's highest number ever of in-patients being treated for the disease, as new infections at record levels for the sixth consecutive day.

The harsh statistics tallied by Reuters cemented the United States' position as the nation worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, even as drugmaker Pfizer Inc provided some hope with successful late-stage tests of its vaccine.

President-elect Joe Biden hailed Pfizer's progress, but urged Americans to wear masks as he noted a vaccine may not be widely available for many months.

The number of Americans with covid-19 currently hospitalized has surged around 73% over the past 30 days to at least 59,008 - a record level that surpasses the previous high of 58,370 on July 22. Daily new infections, meanwhile, exceeded 100,000 for the sixth consecutive day.

Japan environment minister sees greater cooperation with Biden's America

Japan expects greater cooperation in climate change and other environmental issues with the United States under a Joe Biden presidency, Japanese Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said on Tuesday.

Yoshihide Suga, who became prime minister in September, announced last month Japan aimed to cut greenhouse gases to  zero by 2050 and become a carbon-neutral society in a major shift in the country's position on climate change.

"I believe the United States will go in the same direction once (the election result) is confirmed," Koizumi told reporters.

Biden camp considers legal action over agency's delay in recognizing transition

President-elect Joe Biden's transition team is considering legal action over a federal agency's delay in recognizing the Democrat's victory over President Donald Trump in last week's election, a Biden official said on Monday.

The General Services Administration (GSA) normally recognizes a presidential candidate when it becomes clear who has won an election so that a transition of power can begin.

That has not yet happened despite U.S. television and news networks declaring Biden the winner on Saturday after he secured enough electoral votes to secure the presidency.

The law does not clearly spell out when the GSA must act, but Biden transition officials say their victory is clear and a delay is not justified, even as Trump refuses to concede defeat.

Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that there was widespread voting fraud and has filed a raft of lawsuits to challenge the results.

Who are the members of Biden's new coronavirus task force?

The US president-elect has announced the make-up of the new covid-19 advisory board through his transition team after pledging to tackle the US outbreak.
