The recent death of Beninoise ‘s Former President ,Mattieou Kerekou at  the age of 82 years  has brought back memories of a failed coup against him while still in power as a military Head  of State before transmuting to a civilian President.
In an exclusive interview with the News Office Desk  of Paedia Express Multimedia in Lagos,Nigeria ,an indigene ,Mr Francois Tanjo Latun –Noney from Naragetu Tangenta in Materi Province of Benin Republic said he was no doubt the most respected of all of Benin Republic Leaders.
He explained that the deceased states man actually came to power in 1972 after overthrowing a civilian regime hen in power but it was the 16h January attempt on his life that showed  his greatest  in character.
His words:”He had a lot of foreign enemies who were not happy with him because he refused to allow them to loot Benin Republic, so one day they tried to remove him from power but he got wind of  it  and moved ahead of them”
“they killed five soldiers but I think one of the mercenaries was killed and from what I heard his body still lies in our morgue except if he has been buried without my knowledge, we  do not know for sure who was behind the failed coup but the plane that brought the mercenaries left Cotonou and later was to land in Libreville ,Gabon and this led to a major diplomatic warfare between both nations”
“a lot of people died due to the differences between both nations on either side  and I can recall that there was a meeting of the African Union that year and Kerekou publicly accused Omar Bongo of trying to remove from Office”
“Late Omar Bongo travelled to the West to inform them of what happened between him and Kerekou at an A.U meeting and he was urged to server ties with Benin Republic diplomatically”
“in the process a lot of our women who lived in Gabon at the time were raped and killed and the chaos continued for a whole year before there was a truce”
He noted that he saw Kerekou physically for the first time on April,1st,1978 when he came for a military parade to commemorate the one year anniversary of a Governor of a province that was killed during a road crash a year earlier.
He praised Kerekou for some of the reforms he carried out as a leader, saying he helped in the name change from Dahomey to Benin Republic.
According to him current President, Thomas Yayi Boni owe his ascension to power to Kerekou while adding that Kerekou hails from a village called Kotompuka  while Boni is from Borgu Province with the capital in Parakou in the Northern block of  the nation.
Late Mattieu Kerekou is believed lived in highbrow Abomey Calavi in Cotonou in Benin Republic until his death  after an illness.
Some hard core critics of Mattieu Kerekou especially in the nations left wing ,The Communist Party have also blamed him for the downturn in that nations economy insisting that he was very corrupt while in power.
