Olashore
Lancaster Foundation Students is set to commence their trip to the UK. The trip
which is scheduled to hold between March 5th and 19th, is organized in partial
fulfillment of the Lancaster University Foundation Programme (LUFP)
qualification. The Foundation is an offshoot of a globally acclaimed
secondary school institution in Nigeria, Olashore International School.
The
aim of the Academic and Cultural Orientation tour to Lancaster University for
the students is to interact with taster lectures, get orientation about degree
programmes, familiarize themselves with their future course and careers, meet
other students, learn about British Culture and Customs, handle the currency,
use public transport, taste British Cuisine, shop and experience the social, cultural
and political life in the UK, amongst others. During the two weeks visit to the
UK, the LUFP students will also participate in community development and
volunteering programme which further develop their transition to independence.
As
part of its offerings to give its graduating students the best education and a
platform for smooth transition into the Universities abroad, Olashore
International School established Lancaster University Foundation Programme in
2007 after signing a partnership with the Lancaster University in the UK to
provide seamless transition of its students from WASSCE to UK Universities.
The
purpose of the Foundation programme is to provide students with the necessary
skills needed to go on to study for an undergraduate Bachelor Degree at
Lancaster or any UK University. Students embarking on this programme would
spend one year in Olashore International School, Nigeria and three (3) years at
Lancaster University or any UK University. The Lancaster University Foundation
Programme (LUFP) welcomed its first students in October 2007 and has had over
100 students join universities across the UK and beyond.
Some
of the unique features of the Olashore Lancaster Foundation programme includes
study skill sessions, academic and cultural orientation trip to UK
Universities, opportunity to apply to five UK Universities, guaranteed
progression to UK universities, visa processing support, ensuite accommodation
and the learning environment is safe and serene.
According
to the Programme Coordinator Mr H.B. Rufai, “the Olashore foundation programme
is well known, approved and accepted by UK universities. Lecturers from
Lancaster University visit Nigeria in November and June for an intensive study
skills sessions during the one year programme at Olashore. Applicants must have
completed secondary education with good grades in WASSCE before they can enroll
for the One year foundation programme, and when the programme is half way, the
students are taken abroad for taster lectures, volunteering programs and community
development. There are three choices of pathways for every student. These are
Business & Management; Science & Computing and Literary & Social
Studies. Every student is required to offer core modules and also choose any
three subjects from the pathway subjects depending on their career intentions,
Olashore Foundation programme is cheap as compared to other foundation programs
in Nigeria and it is a fraction of the cost of doing similar programme in the
UK. ” he added.
The
school principal, Mr D.K. Smith, emphasized on the essence of the Lancaster
University Foundation Programme (LUFP), his words: “The idea of the Lancaster
Foundation came up after working in affiliation with Lancaster for few years,
under the leadership of the former principal. The essence is to allow for easy
and smooth transition from here in Lancaster University or any University in
the UK through the help of this foundation programme. Lancaster University has
existed for more than 50 years now, and has progressed to being one of the top
10 universities in the UK consistently. Based on the award we got in year 2015
that has positioned Olashore as one of the ten top schools here in Nigeria, we
want to affiliate ourselves with top schools. Transiting from secondary school
to universities in big cities may prove difficult but Lancaster University
Foundation programme at Olashore has made it smooth and effective, so that it
is not new to them. Students are under normal circumstances, expected to go
through the UK central admission system of universities in the UK and make
selections. But one great thing about Lancaster is that it is one of the top
schools in the UK and so if you have the foundation guarantee, gaining
admission to other universities will be smooth and easy.
“Not
only do we develop student’s academic and language proficiency but we also
provide students with opportunities to expand and enhance their study skills,
attributes and personal development which enable our students to get most from
future university experience. Our method of teaching is similar to the UK
universities and includes lectures, seminars, projects, tutorials and personal
tutor system. This method allows students to experience small teaching groups,
providing a level of contact with teaching staff and fulfilling a level of
independent study within their career pathway modules. This academic session,
we directed more attention to independent based research and academic writing
through projects which include British Culture, Lancaster project, Data
Analysis and Case Study. Study skills sessions will be used this session to
enhance students’ knowledge on referencing, plagiarism avoidance and academic
integrity”, he x-rayed.
Established
in 1994, on 60 acres of land, Olashore International School is a co-educational
school which offers high calibre education in a wide range of subjects. It is
one of Nigeria’s leading boarding schools, is particularly appealing to
discerning Nigerians at home and abroad, as well as expatriates residing in
Nigeria, who desire a school with a strong value system, proven track record
and a clear sense of purpose.
