DOING A STUDY ON H.I.V/A.I.D.S
Journalists Against A.I.D.S have declared that while they
will be happy at eventual miracle cure for the H.I.V/A.I.D.S scourge they have
decided to be cautious until they are sure that all loosed ends were tied on
the affair.
In an exclusive chat with The News Office Desk of Paedia
Express Multimedia Group in her office in Lagos,Nigeria,The Program and
Executive Director,J.A.I.D.S.,Ms Olayide Akanni said she was not going to start
celebrating yet at the news over some miracle cure as several miracle cure had
being promoted in the past to raise people’s hopes only for their hopes to be
dashed at the end of the day.
She noted that when people talk about cure,it has to be al encompassing
as it should eb able to work effectively on people of all races or color
irrespective of location.
She warned that one of the pitfalls of the scourge was the
ability of the H.I.V/AI.D.S viral strain to be able to mutate.
Akanni reacts:”we have different strains of the virus and
because it differs in strains ,any treatment developed is taken in that line”
‘There have being instances people have failed with the
first line treatment and then they had to be pushed to the second line
treatment ,so when you talk of the miracle cure,can it deal with the problems
we are living with using the Anti-retroviral drugs”
“With ARV drugs, science has being able to proffer solutions
as a patient can be placed on the 1st,2nd and 3rd
line drugs depending on symptoms and diagnosis”
She assured that upon treatment ,some people have minute
presence of the viral strain and are not even down with any forms of illness
but this does not mean that they were
cured at all in the first place.
She affirmed that that a final drug for cure for H.I.V/A.I.D.S should be able to wipe out
the disease from the bone marrow completely without any forms of trace.
Akanni continues:”The virus normally uses the cell,D.N.A. to
multiply or replicate itself and so
whatever is been promoted as a cure should be able to separate the grains from
the chaff,there has to be clinical trials to be carried out in phases
:1,2,3,,however the drugs that we have in place today that have being promoted
as a cure in the past have passed through different trials”
“The way a White/Caucasian or Black person will react to the
effect of a drug differs as the tissues and cells have some features that separates
them in identity,the cures must yield some result
in an adult ,children whether male or female and it should be able to totally
wipe out the viral strains”
She pointed out that just because some people ‘s viral loads
were undetectable does not mean they were free as the virus could be lodged in
the lymph nodes.
She added that while it was great news if there was a final cure but all the vital processes like testing with
animal models ,clinical trials with humans have to be done as Nigerians will not want a situation
where their raised hopes will be dashed yet again.
