STAKEHOLDERS WARN AGAINST ASSET STRIPPING
POLICY OF BUHARI'S REGIME
BY ABDULMUMINI ADEKU
Stakeholders under the platform of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations ,Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services employees have warned the present administration of dire consequences of President Muhammadu Buhari if it goes ahead to commence the sales of the National Arts Theater and the Tafawa Balewa Square ,venue of Nigeria's independence in 1960.
While addressing a cross section of the media in a world press conference recently ,The President of the body,Comrade Yusuf Zambuk said that he was shocked to the marrow to note that despite the volume of revenue being generated on a daily basis in the land the nation was talking of selling off its key assets.
He chided politicians for being crafty ,saying that they deliberately assign persons who may not be able to perform or deliver to an agency due to what he termed a culture of mediocrity and soon after rendering the government edifice or agency useless the same politicians then turn around to use state resources to buying them over for themselves.
Mr Zambuk went down memory lane to recall how similar efforts were initiated by the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's regime but they had to move against it back then adding that at the time the National Arts Theater was actually concessioned until Late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua reversed the decision.
He assured that a lot of his fellow comrades in the struggle have already taken their protests to the National Assembly of Nigeria over the plans to sell both the Theatre and Tafawa Balewa Square.
He wondered aloud to no one in particular as to what the government was doing with the daily income coming from the sales of crude oil,The Nigerian Ports,Tax Revenues amongst others.
In a related issue,Comrade Benjamin Anthony ,also of the same agency as Mr Zambuk said that the characters of the nation's political class has not changed despite their strength and as such advised stakeholders to exploit this weakness.
Comrade Ayodele Akele ,National Secretary ,National Conscience Party [N.C.P.]said he was a victim of stigma in the Nigerian society because of his decisions to always stand against injustice in all forms of ramifications.
He lamented the fact that Nigerians moved from frying pan to fire in that Goodluck Jonathan 's regime was voted out of office for a new lease of life under the present dispensation ,an action he insists has not worked according to script.
He assured all relevant stakeholders to the fact that he was willing to do all within his powers to puling all forms of resources together so as to be used in supporting the present struggle .
In a related issue, The Deputy Executive Director ,Environmental Rights Action [E.R.A.],Mr Akinbode Oluwafemi said that selling key assets to fund a budget at whatever level was a red alert situation.
He wondered how the present regime want Nigerians to celebrate their national identity when it sells off all national assets .
He urged President Buhari to remember that Tafawa Balewa square represents an iconic moment in Nigeria 's national life:1960 October first independence day
