NOTABLE
POLITICIANS ASK ORTOM TO RUN FOR SECOND TERM
The call on
Governor Samuel Ortom to run for a second term was weekend reechoed during the
decamping of a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
chieftain, Chief Ekpe Ogbu, to the ruling All Progressives Party, APC.
Among the
notable politicians that spoke on the occasion was a former deputy governor,
Chief Stephen Lawani, who said Governor Samuel Ortom, had the courage to hold
local government elections when many governors could not do so because of
paucity of funds.
Lawani who
decamped from the PDP to the APC in 2015, said PDP could not challenge any of
the election results in the law court.
H said Ortom
has remained focused in spite of many detractions and added that the decamping
of the former special adviser on public utilities puts Governor Ortom in a
better position to face the challenges ahead.
Deputy speaker
of the Benue State House of Assembly, James Okefe, was more emphatic on the
issue of Ortom's second term when he said "your 2019 is guaranteed".
According to
him, some people saw him, Okefe, as a betrayer when he left the PDP but today,
he has been vindicated.
Speaker of the
Assembly, Mr Terkimbi Ikyange, on his part, said Chief Ekpe Ogbu and the member
of the Assembly, Anthony Ogbu, took the right decision by leaving the PDP while
Nigeria's ambassador to Russia, Professor Stephen Torkuma Ugba, said under
difficult circumstances, Governor Ortom has given hope to the people.
The former
governorship candidate of the then Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, also said
Ogbu left the PDP because he saw the light.
Chef Ekpe Ogbu
who decamped from the PDP with his teeming supporters at Ukwonyo-Utonkon in Ado
local government area, said Ortom was a God-given leader.
Ogbu further
stated that he decamped because Ortom's administration has demonstrated
commitment to the social, economic and political development of the state even
as the PDP continues to suffer setback because of internal crisis.
Highlight of
the event was the handing over of APC flags to the new members by Governor
Samuel Ortom who described Ekpe Ogbu as a team player.
Ortom assured
Ekpe Ogbu and others who decamped from the PDP that a level playing ground
would be provided for them.
