OPEN
LETTER TO THE VETERAN JOURNALIST:MALLAM KABIRU YUSUF
OF DAILY TRUST NEWSPAPERS,ABUJA,NIGERIA
Dear Sir,
with profound respect to your position as a senior gate
keeper in the art and science of
journalism and by far my senior in age and in the profession at any level.
Your brand ,Daily Trust Newspapers ,Abuja,Nigeria ,has come
a very long way within a very short time and i do pray and hope that one day
you and your team can get rid of the cancer of hypocrisy in your organization in
due course.
You are a member of at least to the best of my knowledge of
a group ,The Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria [N.P.A.N] and to the
best of my knowledge again have done more harm than any good to the profession in the last 17
years or so of my involvement to this noble profession and which is why each
time i see your group making press statements i refer to you people as
"Charlie-Charlie" in the indian movies,a moniker for a comedian or a
highly unserious fellow.
it is instructive to note that a merchant like Chief Nduka Obaigbena who
usually is said to tell his reporters that he had given them the Thisday
Newspapers identity card and should use it to extort money from people and wondered
why they were complaining of unpaid salaries is Your President honestly i cannot
tell the kind of leadership such a character trait will provide, please do
forgive me if my expectations of you people is beyond human comprehension.
Honestly,i will not have bothered to write you at all but i
will have just let you enjoyed your retirement but you are a Fellow of the
Media profession and out of respect have decided to call on you.
When i burnt the effigy of The Guardian ,The Nation and that
of The Comet Newspapers on at least two different occasions to protest the
forgery of my news room reports it was in my rights to do so as no one was
willing to defend me or fight to defend me in the profession at the time.
I find it very strange that all of you at N.P.A.N,The
Nigerian Guild of Editors[NG.E],The
Daily Trust Newspapers do not know or simply have chosen to forget that
Journalism like every other profession globally has its ethics or culture/tradition
and this is what i lay strict adherence in following in teh discharge of my
duties on a daily basis.
i Abdulmumini ireyi Adeku did not create the rules neither did set to introduce new
one's but met them on the ground at least 300 to 400 years after the profession
was actually kick started and so i beg of you to distant your brand from
unethical practices .
Couple of years ago,a British newspaper ,News of the World
owned by the Billionaire Australian ,Mr Rupert Murdoch was forced to pay
millions of pounds sterling in compensations to people for hacking but yet still had to leave the trade due to
loss in confidence by the U.K. public.
My dear elder brother in the trade Mallam Kabir is hacking
too different from forgery ,well i leave you to do work the arithmetic out
mentally .
Have you noticed that the CNN people seems to have stopped
its African media awards after they
noticed the presence of Mr Debo Adeshina
on their judges panel in a protest mail i wrote to its founder, Mr Ted Turner.
i cannot say emphatically what can happen in the future as the
awards can still come later but if the
CNN people here about this latest incident they will feel justified to have
stopped it as the Nigerian press have refused to obey simple rules and
regulations .
So where the entire Nigerian press queued behind the
criminal lots at The Guardian and The Nation Newspapers for promoting indecency
,indiscipline, the rest of the civilized world dealt with it by sacking the
entire CNN award committee as i think and by making the News of the World leave
the trade because of despicable acts which brought the profession into
disrepute .
In NIgeria,we have being doing nothing to encourage
professionalism but boost crass mediocrity.
i wish you well in retirement and may God guide you in all
of your undertakings now and into the future ,i also pray that God will help
you in decision making in the future, amen.
Thanks,
Yours Faithfully,
Abdulmumini Adeku,
Founder,
