ACID RAINS KILLED THIS FISHES
Acid rains believed to be very toxic to
human ,animal and crop consumption have begun in earnest in Nigeria.
Checks by The News Office Desk of
Paedia Express Multimedia Group in Lagos,Nigeria shows that as at 30th
of January,2017 ,rains have fallen at least three times already with light
showers recorded at some locations and heavy downpour seen in other places
within the Lagos metropolis.
An impeccable source told this reporter
that recently his friend who owns an Alloe Vera farm complained bitterly of
having lost his crops due to the effect of the acidic rains despite his usage
of manure on them.
The source explained that what was
happening in the atmosphere was due to the chemical synthesis occurring in the
already depleted ozone layer leading to precipitation of highly toxic rains
which is injurious to man.
Acid rain is a form of precipitation
containing a heavy concentration of sulphuric acid and nitric acid and this type of precipitation has now become
an increasingly serious environmental problem in many areas of North America
and Europe .
Though this form of pollution of
pollution is most severe in and around large urban and industrial areas, substantial
amounts of acid precipitation may be transported great distances.
The process that resulted in the
formation of acid rains generally begins
with emissions into the atmosphere of Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen oxide.
These gases are released by automobiles
,industrial operations and electric power plants .
These gases combine with water vapour in clouds to form sulphuric
and nitric acid.
Acid rains are toxic to fishes and
other forms of aquatic life, vegetations such as crops, trees etc.
It also corrodes the external surfaces
of buildings and other man made structures.
In a world exclusive interview granted
to The News Office Desk of Paedia Express inside the sophisticated Control
Towers of the Muritala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos,Nigeria, the
Assistant General Manager ,Operations of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency
[N.I.MET],Mr Ajeyomi Adewale said that the issue of acid rains in Nigeria was
not an isolated issue as it had happened severally over the years.
His words:”2015,we had rains January,22nd
,2016 we had rains January 19th in Lagos, Nigeria as I kept tracks
of the last two years as we watched out for the “false rains” though it did not
come in the way we expected it to come”
“when you talk of us having rains this
period it is a circle and there is a particular feature we were looking out for
but it came out differently ““Before the real rains came we heard that there was rains at the Toll gate area and there was a period around 22nd
till 24th January,2017 in which we
heard reports of rains in Agege area of Lagos”
“Acid rain is no new thing but is
usually in form of acidic particle mixed with dusts but conveyed in rains as a
liquid medium”
It was gathered by this reporter that
acid rains come before the rainy period and harmattan period with the propensity
to stain clothing’s .
Adewale added that NIMET as part of its
corporate social responsibilities releases annual seasonal rainfall forecast or
predictions annually around March.
