BY ABDULMUMINI ADEKU.
Facts are beginning to emerge on how Mr Effion Bassey now
about60 years or thereabout abandoned his weightlifting career.
In an hour long chat with The News Office Desk of Paedia
Express Multimedia in Lagos,Nigeria, the father and husband of about 29 years
standing while giving thanks to God for giving him the sustain ace also gave
kudos to his wife of been a major source of inspiration and pride to him
admitting that unlike several men he was very fortunate with his choice of wife
in life.
He revealed to this reporter that the 3rd of
March,1991 is a day that he will not forget in a hurry as that was the day
tragedy struck him inside the Seven Up Bottling Plant in Lagos,Nigeria that
almost took his life away in the process but for divine intervention at the
time.
He also gave thanks to God for the timely intervention of
his uncle, the then Group Captain David Ita Ikpeme,Former Governor of old Ondo
state who helped to pay his medical bills at the Omotayo Hospital in
Ikeja,Lagos,Nigeria ,where he was bedridden for at least four years between
1991 till 1995.
He assured that the accident was so severe at the time that
he was unconscious for at least two weeks as he did not know where exactly he was as his entire rib cage was smashed
,with his spinal cord shifting from its original position aside from suffering massive
internal bleeding and shock at the time.
He noted that the incident actually happened due to a
forklift that malfunctioned at the seven up plant in Lagos,Nigeria at the time
in which the device was said to be carrying at least 28 crates of bottled seven
up products and moving from one part of its vast complex to another but he did
not say whether it took place at the Ijora plant of the Ikeja mammoth complex.
He disclosed to this reporter that he spent at least N1.8
million treating himself at Omotayo Hospital at the time and when he suffered
another relapse while working at Nampark Nigerian Plant he used another N806,000
for treatment.
His Words:”I was also attacked by armed robbers who threw me
down at the Ojuelegba Bridge and this was what made doctors to advise me to do
away with anything that will be strenuous and so I had to retire from
weightlifting”
He added that he was a multi-talented sportsman but
weightlifting was his specialty while recalling that the likes of Oliver Orok
who now resides in Calabar,Cross Rivers state was his colleague in the sports.
