The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has described as false and deceptive recent activities by Philip Morris International (PMI) to promote  itself as a supporter of a “smoke-free world”.
ERA/FoEN, in reaction to the start of PMI-funded training of senior journalists in Naivasha, Kenya, with the theme - Tobacco Harm Reduction: Towards a Smoke-free World, said the tobacco corporation un-repentantly continues to misinform the media and the general public using concepts that seem tailored to reducing tobacco harms but in reality undermined efforts by governments to implement effective tobacco control policies.
In September 2017, PMI announced an annual support of $80 million for the establishment of a so-called Foundation for a Smoke-free World over the next 12 years. That announcement which was aimed at burnishing the corporation’s image was however greeted with criticism by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and a host of non-governmental organisations across the globe. The WHO distanced itself from the initiative and asked governments to do same.
ERA/FoEN in a statement issued in Port Harcourt,  said the PMI Kenya training, was a continuation of PMI orchestrated mis-information campaign and attempt to buy media influence and silence rising public support for effective tobacco control laws across Africa.
ERA/FoEN Deputy Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi said: “Governments in Africa and media practitioners should be alarmed that PMI, while increasing the production and marketing of its deadly wares on the continent is now talking about tobacco harms reduction through its so-called trainings. It is totally objectionable.”
Oluwafemi pointed out that a very dangerous dimension to PMI new tactic is the muddling of public health policy issues in its quest to grab more lungs, stressing, “or else, how can it be imagined that a known producer of a lethal product is talking of helping governments achieve goal three of the Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) which promotes Good health and well-being”?
“We can see through this deception. Again if PMI is interested in a smoke-free world all its needs to do is stop cigarette production and stop undermining regulations across our continent,” Oluwafemi added
He advised that governments discontinue engagements with PMI that conflicts with the World Health Organisation - Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC), and particularly strengthen the implementation of Article 5.3 which explicitly obligates Parties to act to protect their public health policies from the commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry in accordance with national law.
He maintained that there is a global consensus about how to reduce tobacco use which has nothing to do with lack of evidence requiring research, but has everything to do with PMI and other tobacco companies doggedly fighting strong policies proven to reduce tobacco use around the world such as higher tobacco taxes, graphic health warnings and bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship
“PMI should stop gambling with our lungs through its deceptive concept of a smoke-free world. There is no safe alternative to the manufacturing, sale and marketing of tobacco products. Attempting to confuse the media with its deceptive message is totally unacceptable”, he insisted.

MARTINS,JOEL OBI LIKELY TO MAKE THE CUT FOR WORLD CUP

The newly-appointed scout of the Super Eagles, Victor Agali, has revealed that the duo of Obafemi Martins and Joel Obi may be called up by Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr for their games next year.
Martins, 33, ended the season in spectacular form for Chinese Cup winners, Shanghai Shenhua, with scoring a stunning goal in the final match against Shanghai SIPG last weekend.
On his part, Obi has already won over Rohr with his impressive displays for Torino in the midfield, where he has also scored two goals despite operating as a deep laying play maker.
Their form has caught the attention of Rohr, and according to Agali. The duo is set for a recall to the team next year, but added that they have to keep ‎working hard.
Agali told Sportsvillagesquare, “All players who are currently performing to expectation in their respective club sides have equal chance. The coach {Rohr] is a disciplinarian who welcomes players based on merit.
“Don’t be surprised to see the likes of in-form Obafemi Martins, Joel Obi and others returning to the team, and I myself won’t hesitate to scout for more legs that will help maintain the good form.”

Islamic Salvation Front at the heights of its campaigns in Algiers,Algeria
Checks by The War Room Desk of Paedia Express Multimedia Group in Lagos,Nigeria ,has showed that the fight or war on terror activities in Nigeria as against the situation in Algeria may likely drag on for longer period of time than expected if feelers are anything to go by as at press time.
A source while speaking to this reporter in Lagos,Nigeria ,said that the Boko Haram group apart from operating sleeper cells and having cooperation within I.S.I.S as a strong support base of platform ,they also run a close knit group unlike that ran by the once "fear- some ",Islamic Salvation Front of Algeria .
He noted that I.S.F. was easier to deal with because the ideology was political unlike Boko Haram which is spiritual.
The source while trying analyze the mindset of a terrorist affirmed that each of them always think that they were the one doing the right thing while the rest of the populace were moving in the wrong direction and this was what even motivates them to go ahead to kill fellow Muslims who do not resptect their views.
The source added that based on an online training that he had recently attended and completed on counter-terrorism ,he had learnt that terrorist activities can only be suppressed and cannot be totally wiped out as expected

THIS AGENCY DESERVES MR PRESIDENT'S ATTENTION
It would appear that President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria and his team will have to do something very urgent about the services and terms of operations of the National Emergency Management Agency [N.E.M.A].
Feelers as at press time suggests to The News office Desk of Paedia Express Multimedia Group in Lagos,Nigeria, shows that if Buhari wants to win in the forthcoming 2019 elections then he will have to make N.E.M.A. more vibrant just as it was before he came in as they will keep his regime in the news for the right reasons.
It is even strange that N.E.M.A.officials who are known to be easily prone to all sorts of dangers in the line of duty have since had their hazards allowance and other perks withdrawn .
A source at N.E.M.A told this reporter that they only wait for orders from Abuja and there was nothing they can do at the moment to change their immediate fortunes.
The source added that they had gone on strike to protest the issue of poor welfare in N.E.M.A.but not much has changed over the matter but had also quickly added while alluding to the fact that construction works was still on -going at their new Lagos office in IKeja, Lagos ,Nigeria

AT OVER N1.5BILLION ANAMBRA VOTES AUCTIONED

MR WILLIE OBIANO WILL GOVERN THE PEOPLE OF ANAMBRA STATE OF NIGERIA FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS The fear of a possible order on a State of Emergency in Anambra state if there was to be an outbreak of electoral violence is now being strongly linked to the grave yard peace recorded in the aftermath of the just concluded Governorship polls.
In a chat with The News office Desk of Paedia Express Multimedia Group in Lagos,Nigeria ,an impeccable source said that even if Mr Willie Obiano will emerge as a winner in the just concluded polls like it eventually did he still finds it pretty difficult to accept the fact that Mr Peter Obi 's candidate for the polls lost to the All Progressive Grand Alliance [A.P.G.A] candidate even in Mr Obi's own local government.
He hailed Governor Willie Obiano at been able to muster the courage to win the polls despite the opposition to his candidature even as he insisted to the fact that money was shared to voters thus influencing the final outcome of results.
The source accused the All Progressives Grand Alliance[A.P.G.A]and the All Progressives Congress [A.P.C.]for sharing money to voters while lamenting the rejection by the electorates of Mr Osita Chidoka for his refusal to mop up votes via bribery.
He revealed that not less than N1.5Billion was spent by Governor Obiano to win the polls recently in the South Eastern state of Anambra.
He added that the issue of money being shared to voters was not a fallacy or fairy tale as people were seen openly distributing cash among other goodies to woo voters during the elections held on the 18th of November,2017 throughout the 21 local government areas of Anambra state to elect a new Governor to marshall the affairs of the state for the next four years
