--
The first set of eight pilots trained at the International Aviation
College on Thursday graduated and received their licenses from the
state Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Governor Ahmed decorated the nine new pilots their ranks and gave them
their Commercial Pilot Licenses (CPL), Private Pilots Licenses (PPL),
instrument rating (IR) and Multi-Engine rating (ME).
The new Pilots are Akangbe Adesola, Arogundade Michael, Memudu
Ibrahim, Afolabi Damilola, Olajuwon Sodunke, Abdul Olajuwon, Alabi
Moshood and Laro Ibrahim Babatunde.
In his address at the ceremony, Governor Ahmed congratulated the new
pilots for their successes during their 16 months training.
He noted that the new pilots were on the verge of a lucrative career
as aviators and are at the forefront of a new generation of young
pilots poised to take over from the ageing forerunners.
Ahmed commended the former governor, Senator Bukola Saraki whose
vision of an aviation hub led to the establishment of the
International Aviation College (IAC) and the near-by Ilorin Cargo
Terminal.
“I am pleased to note that the vision is gradually coming to fruition
with the success of this college and the imminent opening of the
Ilorin Cargo Terminal,” the governor said.
According to the governor, his administration’s sustenance of the
institution and the IAC’s success story bore eloquent testimony to the
benefits of continuity in government and to the shared commitment to a
greater Kwara State.
Dr Ahmed gave credit to the Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah
whose ministry and Parastatals supported the Aviation College since
inception.
He appealed to the minister to continue to support for the College and
the Ilorin Cargo Terminal, which he said would become operational
within the first quarter of 2014.
“Today, well-trained aviators and allied professionals remain premium
in the aviation industry in Nigeria and abroad.
“As the aviation sector expands, due to a global increase in
requirement for air travel and the consequent increase in aircraft, so
does the demand for well-trained aviation professionals to run the
industry”, he added.
He noted that the Aviation College has tremendous growth potential and
the capacity to enhance human capital development within and outside
the sector.

The governor expressed his happiness that the students graduated in 16
months as against the 18 months advertised for the course due to the
Management’s emphasis on high training standards and the caliber of
its trainers.

“The Kwara State Government will continue to support the College
financially to meet with its obligations and for future growth of the
College”, he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, chairman of Board of Directors of the
Aviation College, Capt Taiwo Popoola told the governor that the
college can accommodate and train 60 students at a go.
This, he said was made possible because of the numbers of aircrafts
and Flying Simulators in the Aviation College.
“In practical terms, the College needs more training Aircrafts in
order to satisfy the NCAA regulations on a number of students to an
aircraft,” the chairman said.
Capt Popoola therefore appealed to the governor to always assist the
college financially until such a time it would stabilize.
