The Akula 310 is a fully-faired version of the BMW G310R, which has been co-developed by BMW Motorrad and TVS Motors.
TVS Motors showcased the Akula 310 as a concept at the Auto Expo in February, 2016, and it instantly became an attention magnet. It has been confirmed now through official sources that the production version of the Akula 310 will be launched between April to June, 2017. Considering, the motorcycle has been spotted many times undergoing final testing, the company could try and launch the motorcycle sometime in April. The motorcycle with its radical styling, grabbed the imagination of motorcycle enthusiasts and also showcased the growing technical capabilities of TVS Motors.
The Akula 310 is a fully-faired version of the BMW G310R, which has been co-developed by BMW Motorrad and TVS Motors. The motorcycle will use the same engine as found in the G310R but could be tuned for a stronger top end in favour of track-focussed performance. Once launched, the Akula 310 will be the most powerful and fastest motorcycle from TVS. The single-cylinder engine is expected to produce about 35 hp and will be mated to a six-speed transmission. Given the full-fairing and a stronger top-end, the Akula 310 would have a higher top speed than the BMW G310R, possibly at the cost of drivability. However, TVS Motors hasn't disclosed any official specifications yet.
On the design front, the Akula 310 will be unlike any other motorcycle in the market and the only real competitor to it will be the KTM RC390 since both motorcycles exude an outright focus on performance. The word Akula is derived from Russian, wherein it means shark and looking at the pictures of the Akula 310, one can't ignore the resemblance. The sharp and hunkered-down fairing with a raked up rear bears a kinetic design, which reflects motion and aggression even at a standstill.
While the concept motorcycle had a carbon-fibre exhaust can and a go-pro camera mount at the rear, these features might not make it to the production motorcycle in order to keep the cost in check. However, the motorcycle will retain the upside down forks and a monoshock at the rear along with twin LED/ projector headlamps. The carbon-fibre parts too will reduce and the motorcycle could sport a carbon-fibre finish on conventional panels instead. ABS will be offered as standard and the motorcycle is expected to come with sticky Pirelli tyres, as already seen on the RTR 200 4V.
TVS is expected to price the Akula 310 under Rs 2 lakh, which will make it an exceptional value-for-money offering. In terms of power, the motorcycle will sit at par with the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and between the KTM RC200 and the RC390. If TVS can get the price right and ensure that the design and features are retained largely, the Akula 310 will have a bright chance of selling well. An icing on the cake would be an optional pack with even more stickier tyre, a race-prepped exhaust and a short shifter. We hope TVS is listening!
