The year 1995/1996 has being described by a key source to The News office Desk of the E.N.M. Paedia Express Multimedia Group of Lagos,Nigeria as the year with the highest casualty rate in the attacks by the hemorrhagic fever, Lassa Fever..
The source lamented the fact that despite the great  economic importance of the disease  in the global biomass ,she was shocked to discover that it was not getting the same level of media attention less lethal disease factors like Covid-19 was generating.
She recalled that as a student of the Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma ,Edo State she was an eye witness to how the disease ravaged the community .
She speaks:"a lot of us did not have school accommodation and so  we lived with the people in town  and during that one year Academic Staff Union of Universities  strike a lot of people died as we even buried one of our school mates at the time ,augusta and i could recall that she hailed from irrua"
"You could hardly go a day or whole week without somebody dying of Lassa Fever  in that area in 1995/1996"
"Augusta's death was rather painful as she was one of us ,it took place during the strikes and she was already buried  but as soon as we had resumed in school back then we took a quick trip to Irrua to commiserate with her family and then pay our last respects"
The source hailed the General Hospital in Irrua ,Edo State which according to her remains the number one centre for the study and research of Lassa Fever in West Africa,a feat which even the World Health Organization does not contest at all..
