investigations
.....................................................................Global update on Ebola War
BY ABDULMUMINI ADEKU.(JOHN WOODS,CANADIAN PRESS)
A Nigerian Family is currently scarred stiff about the whereabouts
of one of its members who lives in
Monrovia,a month after they last had a discussion with him over the internet
regarding the Ebola outbreak in Liberia.
In an investigation conducted by Paedia Express Multimedia in
Lagos, Nigeria by Madam Doris Majiyagbe[not real names],it was learnt that Mr
Charles Majiyagbe who lives in Monrovia was trying to bribe his way through the
tight Liberian and Ivorian border as the Eboa virus crisis gets messier.
It is not known as at press time what the Nigerian Embassies
in Monrovia in Liberia ,Freetown, in Sierra Leone and Conakry in Guinea as Nigerians
living in the diasporas keep giving Paedia Express Multimedia the news about how unreliable Nigerian embassy officials were.
Mrs Majiyagbe said that her step son had gotten in touch
with her about a month ago to complain bitterly about the big humanitarian
crisis in Liberia and was in dire financial
need and she and other family members had rallied round him but up till now
they have not had from him a month after that.
She explained that what made her to worry was that there exists
an air travel ban and a cross border ban as well but quickly added that Mr
Charles Majiyagbe promised to bribe his way through the gendarme at the Ivory
Coast and Liberian borders.
Madam majiyagbe laments:”I have also heard that there is a
shoot at sight order on any illegal migrant at the borders and this is what
worries me, eh asked us for money and I sent him some other
and I think some other family members raised some amount for him too as I
hear that the situation over there is really tense”
“corpses are seen littering the streets ,there is a general panic
over the issue,if he comes to Nigeria then he will have do a mandatory 21 days
of quarantine before we will allow him to visit us”
In a related issue,Paedia Express Multimedia had discovered
a near empty blood bank in Lagos,Nigeria as the world continues to grapple with
the pains of the worst Ebola Virus outbreak since it was first isolated in 1976
In a village in the jungles of Congo.
In an investigation conducted in Lagos,Nigeria this reporter
had to actually donate a pint of blood in order to break down the walls of
official secrecy concerning the process of blood transfusion in Nigeria.
At the ultra modern ;Health Point Diagnostic Centre in
Ifako-Ijaiye ,Lagos ,it was discovered that the level of blood donation had not
passed the level it was before the outbreak of Ebola Virus in West Africa.
A laboratory medical officer at the Health Centre told this
reporter that we were in a period that blood donation was seriously needed due
to the dangers that Ebola virus poses to
everybody .
He noted that blood donation at the centre had neither
reduced nor increased as the situation
was still the same like the pre-ebola outbreak era.
In the centers manifest it was discovered the between july
12th to july 31st,2014 .the health centre has about 29
people donating blood to its blood bank program.
Paedia Express Multimedia also gathered that between August1st
,2014 to August 31st,2014 ,.about 43 adults had donated blood to the
centers blood transfusion centre.
However just a paltry 7 individuals had donated blood since
2nd September,2014 till 5th of the same month when this reporter came calling.
It was observed in some literatures at the facility that the Blood Bank Society of
Nigeria[B.B.S.N]and the Safe Blood For Africa Foundation[S.B.A.F] were trying to encourage the society positively
on the benefit of donating blood.
This reporter also leant through 2 laboratory scientists that the donation of blood by
people with a history of high blood pressure or hypertension was good for them
as it will go a long way in regulating the flow of the blood stream thereby
saving them from sudden and early
death..
It was uncovered that there were well over 200 medical
diagnostics centre in Lagos state and
the situation as far as blood donation was concerned was almost the same .
ican Union to host emergency meeting of the
Executive Council to consolidate collective continental efforts against Ebola
The African Union Executive Council will meet in
Addis Ababa on 8 September today to adopt a common position and define
appropriate strategies to enable Africa to effectively combat the Ebola
epidemic.
The council’s emergency meeting has been
necessitated by the need to have a common understanding of the Ebola Virus
Disease (EVD) and current status of the response and to come up with a
collective continental approach, taking into account the socio-political and
economic impact of the disease.
On July 31, the Permanent Representatives
Committee (PRC) of the AU met ahead of the executive council meeting, and
discussed various issues in preparation of the meeting, that included direct
assistance to member states affected by Ebola and the need to accelerate
efforts towards the establishment of an African Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention (ACDCP).
The meeting also highlighted the importance of
communication strategies on the crisis, both within and outside the continent,
mobilisation of the necessary resources, and building the capacity of member
states in the field of research on vaccines and drugs against disease.
Various African countries including Nigeria,
Botswana, Malawi, Gambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South
Africa have extended support to Ebola affected countries, such as direct
funding, medical personnel and clinics to compliment on-going AU and international
efforts.
The executive council meeting is also expected to
deliberate on the suspension of flights, and maritime and border closures, as
well as stigmatization of the affected countries and their nationals.
Concern has been raised by some countries that
such measures could have serious socio economic and cultural effects, and could
ultimately lead to increased suffering of people in the affected countries.
Ebola has largely affected countries in West
Africa and there are concerns not only over the fatality rate, but also on the
consequences of the disease on the affected countries, many of whom are trying
to grow their economies after emerging from conflict.
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the
African Union invoked Article 6f of its protocol and decided on August 19 to
“authorize the immediate deployment of an AU-led Joint Military and Civil
Medical Mission against Ebola, comprising of medical doctors, nurses and other
medical and paramedical personnel, as well as military medical personnel. The first
deployment of the medical mission is scheduled to start on the 10th of
September 2014.
Media are invited to cover the opening session of
the emergency meeting of the executive council on September 8. A press
conference will be held on the same day.
Meanwhile ,Paedia Express Multimedia has officially reported as at press time, the management and staff of the Iris Medical Foundation and its sister firm,Iris Drugs Limited over there illicit conduct while the former was investigating the Ebola Virus crisis recently
Canada has had a continuous laboratory presence in the West African outbreak zone since June, with three-person teams typically spending a month in operation before being spelled off.
But the most recent team was abruptly withdrawn from Sierra Leone late last month when three people at the hotel complex where they were staying were diagnosed with Ebola. It is believed the infected people were hotel staff.
As well, an epidemiologist from Senegal who was working in a different part of the same unit and staying in the same hotel contracted Ebola.
The man was later sent by air ambulance to Germany for treatment.
At the time, the Public Health Agency said the lab workers were being brought home for their own safety. But the agency said a replacement team would be sent to Sierra Leone when arrangements were made to ensure a safer living environment.
Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are struggling to cope with the largest Ebola outbreak in known history, which has seen roughly 3,700 infections and an estimated 1,850 deaths. Those figures are larger than the combine totals of all previous known outbreaks of Ebola.
The World Health Organization warned Friday that at the current rate of spread, it expects to see cases increase by thousands of new infections a week in coming weeks, an unprecedented event with this disease.
