There is a serious search party now in the look out for the
missing psychiatric patient at the Federal Neuro Psychiatry Hospital in Yaba,Mr Lucky Olanrewaju.
In an exclusive investigation by Paedia Express Multimedia
on the subject in Lagos, Nigeria, the top echelon of the public and medical
facility while apologizing to the family of the patient on the matter insisted
that they were as worried about the
incident as there reputation was at stake.
The Federal Neuro Psychiatry Hospital in Yaba,Lagos, Nigeria
is a facility that is fenced with a centralized
entrance but with other exits just opposite the busy Yaba Central Bus Terminus.
This reporter got there around 12:30P.M. on the 11th
of September,2014 and after completing the vital bureaucratic formalities was
told that Dr Abolore Lawal, Chief Medical Director of the facility was actually
on his way out of the compound.
This reporter was made to wait for what looked like 10
minutes or thereabout in the lobby and the reception before Dr Lawal now joined
the fray.
The psychiatric expert told Paedia Express Multimedia exclusively
that he would have loved to have been part of the expansive press conference on
the top echelon of the hospital had been waiting for the arrival of this reporter for about two weeks but sadly
he had an urgent appointment that he had to attend to at the passport office.
He then directed a top official of the hospital who turned
out to be the chief security officer of the, Mr Benard Daudu to the Head
Clinical Services of the Hospital, Dr Richard Adebayo’s office for further
investigations for the purpose of public awareness as he made way in his deep
ash colored, Toyota Camry Car.
The chief security officer informed this reporter that he will be lying if he said that he was
not aware of Mrs Olanrewaju’s case but that it was not true that 10 persons
were missing in there hospital.
He explained that on the day Mr Olanrewaju was said to have disappeared
some people from his office at Salini Constructions Company Limited actually visited
him and may be those friends will know of his whereabouts but quickly added
that to now say or insinuate that they
were responsible for his disappearing was very wrong.
He revealed to this reporter that Mrs Olanrewaju, the wife
of the missing patient was actually supposed to take a letter from his office
to introduce her to the Divisional Police Officer of the Sabo Police Station in
Yaba,Lagos so that this will help to fast track her efforts at investigations
into her husband’s disappearance but that they were surprised that they had not
heard anything from her for sometime.
Paedia Express Multimedia was later informed exclusively
that the letter had been ready since 26th August ,2014 for Mrs
Olanrewaju to take to the domain of officers of the Nigerian Police .
He noted that there have been instances where patients try
to escape but are apprehended by his men and then are returned back to there wards
but quickly added that if the issue of Mrs Olanrewaju’s mail was not brought up
to his attention he may not know at all.
In his submission, the Head Clinical services of the
Hospital,Dr Adebayo said that the hospital has been in business for about 100
years and that the Olanrewaju saga was
not entirely a new thing to them as they
go through all sorts of challenges when they admit a patient noting that some
of the patients do not even believe that they should be admitted in the first place.
He pointed out that some of there patients especially those
been treated for hard drugs addiction were usually violent.
He revealed that the hospital ‘s CCTV camera can not cover everything
at the hospital because of the need to respect the patients confidentiality as
the place was a hospital and not an asylum as this also explains why the patients
do not wear any special uniforms while on admission.
He assured that if they were in the habit of losing at least
10 patients on a weekly basis they will no longer be in the trade.
His words:”we have
had cases when patients camouflage ,I mean we are not in an asylum so we not
wear special uniforms for them ,there are several entry points to the hospital,we have quarters
where staff lives,we have other commercial ventures in place”
“Mrs Olanrewaju has been in correspondence with Mrs Ojo,Mr Adegbaju
and this is the largest psychiatric Hospital in West Africa ,so if one of our
patient is missing it is very vital to us irrespective of the social status of
the victim”
Adebayo continues:”This patient had been taken to the Lagos
state Teaching Hospital,he was taken to a church for spiritual
intervention before been brought
here, since he ws found missing we have been doing a lot to look for him”
This reporter was showed a letter in the presence of other
hospital chieftains on what ,signed by the Director of Administration on what Mrs Olanrewaju was supposed to do to get her
husband back when she gets to the Nigerian Police.
In his contributions on the growing inferno,Dr Dapo Adegbaju
,Consultant Psychiatric of the facility explained that the patient was admitted to the hospital
on the 18th of June,2014 for
what they diagnosed as a psychiatric condition but that in the early hours of 17th
of July,2014,the same patient was found to have disappeared thus necessitating the
need by them to immediately fill a missing patient form.
According to him,it was a policy of the hospital to always
have4 a search party in place whenever they discover that a patient was
missing as some of the patients may
still be lurking around within the hospital surroundings.
He disclosed that at least about 80 percent of escaped patients
from there hospital usually go back home to there families most of whom get in
touch with them so that they can continue there treatment of the patient but sadly
this has not being the case in Mr Olanrewaju’s case.
He pointed out that it was also the policy of the hospital
to report missing patients to security agents so that when such patients are
picked up they can get in touch with them for further medical psycho-analysis
and therapy so that they do not become a social menace.
Dr Adegbaju told this reporter that during his clinical
examination of the patient ,Mr Lucky Olanrewaju,he discovered that he was suffering
from a case of severe visual hallucination, auditory hallucination and the
tendency to be violent in behavior thus making
him to be placed on such drugs like anti-psychotic and anti-biotic to
help nurture the patient back to sound
health.
In a related issue, The Head Nursing of the facility, Mrs
Yemisi Ojo while lamenting the incident said
that two weeks after the disappearance of the patient, the Head of the
Department of Social Welfare in the facility ,herself, legal adviser
accompanied Mrs Olanrewaju to the Sabo Police Station as interrogation and
investigations continued on the matter.
She disclosed exclusively to Paedia Express Multimedia that the
patient was responding very well to treatment aside from the malaria fever that
he complained of and which he was promptly treated of before the sudden disappearance.
In a related matter, ,The Divisional Police
officer,Sabo,Yaba-Lagos said that the situation
was still very hazy as at press time during a phone conversation with this
reporter on the matter.
His words:”I myself do not know the situation as it was just
a report that was made to us ,so I cannot say what the situation is as at
present”
Mrs Olanrewaju later told this reporter in a routine phone
chat that she had since collected the letter for the Nigerian Police and given
it to them as expected by the hospital authorities even as she continues to criticize
the management of the entire crisis by all the parties involved.
