U.K weather forecast: Britain braced for ATLANTIC ASSAULT - warning for TORRENTIAL rain

TORRENTIAL rain and gales are about to batter the UK as cold but settled conditions give way to a barrage of storms this week.

Britons are warned to brace for a ‘significant change’ in the weather as powerful low-pressure systems barrel in from the Atlantic. Things will take a turn for the worse around mid-week with strong winds and heavy rain forecast into the weekend. The good news is that after an unusually chilly early May Bank Holiday, warmer weather is forecast later this month.

Temperatures will rocket durning the middle of May as tropical air floods in from the Continent, according to some forecasters.

However it is a different picture for the next few days with bad weather likely to trigger government warnings, the Met Office said..

Meteorologist Mark Wilson said: “A band of cloud and rain spreads in from the west and moves eastwards on Tuesday bringing a change to more unsettled conditions from mid-week.

“There is going to be quite a bit of rain around and it will be quite windy at times, especially in the north.

“There is the potential for some particularly heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday in the northeast.

“Elsewhere we are looking at heavy thundery showers across much of England and Wales and it will be very windy at times particularly along coastal regions, this will need to be watched in terms of issuing any warnings.

“A complicated area of low pressure comes in from the west around mid-week bringing much of the unsettled weather before another low skirts the UK towards the end of the week.”

Bitter polar air responsible for the cold weather will move away this week allowing warmer winds to lift temperatures.

Thermometers will nudge back into the mid to high-double figures with some experts predicting another hot spell before the end of the month.

Mr Wilson said: “Temperatures will recover by the end of this week with high pressure expected to build from the west towards the weekend.

“We are looking at temperatures of around 17C (62.6F) in southern parts of the country.”

Long-range forecaster James Madden, of Exacta Weather, said: “Despite the potential for some unsettled and mixed weather during the start of May, confidence is high for a switch to an early taste of summer from mid month onwards, possibly earlier in southern areas.

“Southern parts of the country could bask in some very high temperatures from the middle of May, through the rest of the month and into the start of summer.”

Netweather forecaster Paul Michaelwaite warned a change to wetter, windier weather will set in from Wednesday.

He said: “Wednesday brings a significant change.

“Wet and windy weather will be sweeping up from the southwest, as Atlantic low pressure moves in.

“Northern Scotland will be the last to see the wet weather, and following behind the bands of rain will be sunnier spells with some sharp, perhaps thundery showers.”
