EDITORIAL OPINION
SUPER SOLDIER IS COMING
we hope that the robots are not sabotaged by Nigerian soldiers again like in the past
On two occasions now ,Nigerians have been told in very clear terms by its
Armed Forces that are not prepared for the battle to fight the insurgency
caused by the dreaded Islamist group,Boko Haram.
On those two occasions ,they
rebelled against the establishment as they claimed that they were not willing
to go into battle with Boko Haram as they were ill equipped to face the terror
group.
The military High Command threatened
fire and brimstone over the issue and promised a court martial but on both occasions
nothing came out of it as it was clear that the leadership was as guilty as its
followers.
With billions of dollars of tax
payers funds going into the nations defense sector ,this nothing but a national
tragedy of immeasurable proportion.
On the 25 th of August ,2014 ,everything
came to a head when it was gathered that 480 Nigerian Soldiers had defected to
the Cameroun though this was immediately refuted by the military leadership in Nigeria.
Now the implications of this
singular incident is grave for Nigeria's
already fragile security and territorial
integrity if we do not act very fast to nip this worrying trend of a non
performing Armed Forces into the bud.
It is high time that the Nigerian
Armed Forces working in consonance with the Federal Government get hold of a
Super Soldier.
By a Super Soldier we are talking of
a Robot ,which will take the place of mortal men since they have declared themselves
so far as completely useless.
With a Robot in place, all we need
to do is back it with a sincere armory and no form of sabotage while efforts
should be made to probe and punish those who converted our defense funds into
private use and if this is done Boko Haram will be checked.
A super Soldier is expected to be fire
proof, bomb proof and bullet proof thus making it 21st century compliant in terms of military warfare.
It will be able to take on the
militia group, Boko Haram without
breaking any form of sweat
But it is key that this machine
should never be allowed to fall into the wrong hands like the previous weapons
of the Nigerian army.
With a Super Soldier in
place,Nigeria would have been ushered into the list of a privileged few whose
military infrastructures is of a cutting edge level as it will reduce the
mortality rate in the Armed Forces due to the terror crisis in the North
Eastern part of Nigeria.
Military robots include the SWORDS
robot which is currently used in ground-based combat. It can use a variety
of weapons and there is some discussion of giving it some degree of autonomy in
battleground situations.Unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs), which are an upgraded form of UAVs, can do a wide variety of missions, including combat. UCAVs are being designed such as the BAE Systems Mantis which would have the ability to fly themselves, to pick their own course and target, and to make most decisions on their own The BAE Taranis is a UCAV built by Great Britain which can fly across continents without a pilot and has new means to avoid detection. Flight trials are expected to begin in 2011
The AAAI has studied this topic in depth and its president has commissioned a study to look at this issue.
Some have suggested a need to build "Friendly AI", meaning that the advances which are already occurring with AI should also include an effort to make AI intrinsically friendly and humane.] Several such measures reportedly already exist, with robot-heavy countries such as Japan and South Korea having begun to pass regulations requiring robots to be equipped with safety systems, and possibly sets of 'laws' akin to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. An official report was issued in 2009 by the Japanese government's Robot Industry Policy Committee. Chinese officials and researchers have issued a report suggesting a set of ethical rules, and a set of new legal guidelines referred to as "Robot Legal Studies." Some concern has been expressed over a possible occurrence of robots telling apparent falsehoods.
