Gunmen believed to be Boko Haram insurgents
dressed in military uniforms on Tuesday attacked motorists on the
Maiduguri-Kano Expressway near Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno
State, killing no fewer than 54 and abducted several others, eyewitnesses said.
The insurgents stormed the town at about 5:00pm, erected a road block on the expressway before they launched their attacks.
Borno State Police Commissioner Lawan Tanko, told newsmen in Maiduguri, the state capital on Wednesday that they had no record of casualty, but he had sent policemen to ensure normalcy in the troubled town.
Garba Ngamdu, a Senior Adviser on Labour to the Governor, told journalists that the gunmen killed five persons in Benisheikh and set ablaze up to 100 houses, shops and vehicles, among other private property. No security officer showed up to defend the victims.

“The Boko Haram gunmen attacked our town, killing
five persons and burning several houses. No fewer than 100 had been counted.
They also attacked motorists and killed several persons of which I cannot give
actual figure of casualties,” Ngamdu said.
The state police commissioner said the police authorities were yet to gather details of the incident. “It was an unfortunate incident in Benisheikh. But we are yet to get details of what happened especially on casualty figure. We have sent a team of our men down there to ascertain what really happened,” he said.
A commercial driver Haliru Ismail said his vehicle was burnt, some of his passengers were shot at and others were taken away by the Boko Haram gunmen.
“The gunmen who attacked us were dressed like soldiers and carrying heavy arms,” Ismail said.
The state police commissioner said the police authorities were yet to gather details of the incident. “It was an unfortunate incident in Benisheikh. But we are yet to get details of what happened especially on casualty figure. We have sent a team of our men down there to ascertain what really happened,” he said.
