MOBILE AUTHENTICATION SERVICE (MAS) CODE FOR POSTINOR II
Lagos – Society for Family Health Nigeria is set to launch
Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) code for Postinor II to counter the efforts
of counterfeiters and producers of fake packets of the product.
Postinor II is the foremost brand of
emergency contraceptive in Nigeria; with market share of almost 80%, the brand name
is recognisable and very popular. Emergency contraceptives assist women who may
not have used a contraceptive during sex to prevent unplanned pregnancy. It is
also very important in cases of rape and in conflict prone situations where
regular contraceptives are unavailable or inaccessible. In recent times,
Postinor II has fallen victim to the malicious pranks of counterfeiters of
pharmaceutical products. Counterfeiters sell to end users who in turn
experience adverse effects, or the method fails completely; thus putting lives
at risk and discrediting the product.
As a result of the nuisance caused
by fakers and counterfeiters of food and pharmaceutical products, the National
Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control recommended the mobile authentication
number coding system. SFH is pleased to support the government in its fight
against fake drugs by keying into this initiative. Speaking on SFH’s
introduction of the MAS coding for Postinor 2, Mr. Obinna Nwogu, Enterprise
Funds Manager SFH stated “SFH has gone ahead to ensure that Postinor II
has a MAS code so that end users will scratch the product and send a free SMS
to the number, whereupon a response is received to verify whether the product
is real or fake.”
Postinor II is the first product SFH
is adopting this coding system for; in addition it is the first emergency
contraceptive in Nigeria to have the MAS code. Noting the importance of this, Mr.
Damola Oluwalana Director Field Operations SFH iterated that “SFH is the
owner of the Postinor II brand in Nigeria and because of the success of the
product; some counterfeiters even quote our NAFDAC number. The MAS code will
checkmate the activities of producer of fake Postinor II and counterfeiters. We
hope that it will reassure the general populace that Postinor II is still as
effective as ever. It will also show that SFH is still effective in service
delivery.”
