……………………….Will Nwofor emerge from the ashes of obscurity to
help Nigeria?
Tall, leggy Nigerian International Football star,Uche Nwofor
who plies his trade this days with Dutch side,Heerenven in the Eredivisie may yet defy his faith and post a sterling performance
at the World Cup in Brazil.
In the season just ended in Holland, the Nigerian only played
a paltry three times for his club all season and despite been ready to play was not given match
time by his coaches since November,2013.
When he got picked against all possible permutations ,not a
lot of people wondered why he got picked but against the Tartan Army of
Scotland in the recent world cup friend lies at Craven Cottage in London ,United
Kingdom he proved skeptics wrong.
He came into the game as a cameo as Nigeria chased the game
deep into the dying seconds in the last quarter and on his fourth touches on
the round leather object he sent his fellow country men to land of ecstasy as
he stabbed home into a yawning net from a very tight angle.
In the minutes he spent on the pitch ,he made usage of
space, and positioning thus underlying his importance in the team that will
line up in Brazil despite his relatively young age.
The last time he played for the team he scored twice from
just three touches on the ball against the bafana bafana of South Africa in the
2013 Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.
His ability to hold on to the ball while allowing his team
mates to take positions on the field of play is a delight to watch,it is
obvious that the young man is waiting to explode in Brazil.
A source said:”His coaches are not using him in Holland but he looks like a
fantastic player,I think he is a victim of racism’Uche Innocent Nwofor was on the born 17th September 1991 in Lagos and is a Nigerian footballer currently playing as a striker for SC Heerenveen, on loan from VVV Venlo, in the Dutch Eredivisie
Nwofor began his career with Power
United also called Anambra Pillars F.C.[1] He left in summer 2009 to go on loan to
Nigerian premier league side Shooting Stars F.C.[2] where he played for one season before
joining Rangers FC.
Nwofor signed with VVV Venlo in August 2011,[3] despite being referenced as a target
for the Portuguese club S.L. Benfica. [4] Following interest from other clubs,
Reports monitored in the media suggested that Nwofor might be forced to abandon
the contract which he previously signed with Venlo for a more lucrative one
however Nwofor stated in an interview that he was happy to start life in the
Netherlands as a professional player and resounded his wish to play for VVV
Venlo.[5]
On 11 September 2011, Nwofor
announced his arrival by scoring on his debut for VVV Venlo in a thrilling 3:3 home draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch top-flight on Sunday. [6] In his first season he scored 4 goals
in the Eredivisie.[7]
In April 2011 Nwofor represented Nigeria
under-20 team where he netted four goals in five games to finish
highest goal scorer of the 2011 African
Youth Championship as Nigeria won a sixth continental title in Johannesburg [8] and he was named the Goal.com star of
the week in the tournament. [9]
In August 2011 Nwofor represented Nigeria in the FIFA U-20 World Cup
in Colombia. He was an instant hit, coming of the bench to score two goals in 6
minutes against Croatia,[10] Nigeria was subsequently knocked out by
France in the quarter finals in a 3–2 thriller.[11]
Nwofor earned his first
full-international cap for the Super Eagles
on 3 March 2010 in a friendly game against the Congo DR
national football team. He was also instrumental when Nigeria's B
team beat Republic of Benin
4–0 in the WAFU Nations Cup.[12]
In July 2013, Nwofor was called up
by the Nigerian national team for an international friendly match against South
Africa in Durban on 14 August.[13] He scored 2 goals in the 49th and 68th
minutes.
In The first of Nigeria's
World Cup warm-up matches of 2014, Nwofor scored a last minute equaliser to
spare Nigeria's blushes against an in-form Scotland.
The match ended 2-2.
Before the 2011 African
Youth Championship, Nwofor's age became the subject of controversy.[14] When he played for Anambra Pillars
in 2009, club's official website stated that he was born on 28 February 1989.[15]
