YEZIDS ARE OVER 100,000
BY ABDULMUMINI ADEKU
This is a religious sect of about 100,000 people or even more to be found in areas like
Mosul in Iraq,Diyarbakiri in Turkey,Aleppo in Syria,Armenia and the Caucasus
region and in parts of Iran.
The religion is a combination of Zoroaster
,Judaism,Manichean, Nestomian Christianity and Islam.
The sect members believe that they are created differently
and so try to separate themselves from the rest of mankind.
They have a well organized society with a Chief Sheikh as
the supreme religious head and an Emir or Prince as the secular Head.
The Chief divine figure of the Yezidis is the Malak Taus
also called the peacock angel and he is worshipped in the form of a peacock as
he rules the universe with six other angels but all are seven God who has had
no direct interest in the universe since he created it.
The 7 Angels are worshipped by the Yazidi in the forms of 7
casted bronze called Sanjaq and Yazids
deny the existence of evil and therefore also rejects in very strong terms the
concepts of sin .the devil and hell as a spiritual theory.
According to them ,the breaking of a divine law is expiated
by way of progressive purification of the souls.
Yazids customarily believe that when the devil repented of
his sins of pride he was pardoned by God.
The Yazid religious centre and place of pilgrimage is the
tomb of Sheikh located at former Christian monastery in the town of Ash
Shaykh,North of Mosul in present day,Iraq.
Kitab Al Jilwah [Book of Revelation}and Mashaf Rash [Black
Writing]form the sacred scriptures of the Yazidis .
An arabic hymn praising Shaykh Adi is held very much in
great esteem in Yazidi circle.
