ETHIOPIA IS AFRICA'S OLDEST SURVIVING CIVILIZATION

Save for ancient Egypt and one or two archaeological finds  in history ,Ethiopia without a doubt is Africa's oldest surviving civilization.

According to the Oxford based Encyclopedia ,a copy of which is in Paedia Express Library in Lagos,Nigeria ,Ethiopia has a carbon dated recorded  history of not less than 2,000 years .

The Sabeans ,a people from Southern  Arabian Peninsula came to this part of  africa sometimes and around 500 B.C.

The empire of Axum was established in 200 B.C. and was converted to christainity in the 4th century A.D. under the rule of Emperor Ezana .

Addis Ababa,Harer,Gonder with ancient castles and its ruins, Axum:am ancient town with lots of religious establishments are some of the major tourist landmarks..

There are many monasteries in Ethiopia ,some of the most ancient and famous are the Debra Libanos in Shewa,Debra Damo in the Tigrai and Saint Stephen on an island in Lake Hayq.

The Ethiopian calendar which is Christain in outlook is counted  7 years from behind that of the Gregorian count which is commonly in use.

so 2019 :which is now will be officially called 2012 in Addis Ababa.

The solar year found in a Gregorian calendar has 365 days with 366 days  every four years.

There are 13 months and they are Maskaram,Tekemt,Hidar,Tahsas,Ter,Yekatit,Megabit,Miazia,Guenbot,Sene,Hamle,Nehase and Pengumen  with all months having 80 days save for Pengumen.

All months have 30 days except Pagumen which has five days normally and six days in a leap year.

Important dates  in Ethiopia remains maskal which commemorates the day when Saint Helena discovered the true cross of Jesus ,Timkat,Ethiopian Christain epiphaniy.

The Ethiopian  Christians ,Genna is held on the 28th Tahsas annually ,Good friday is feted on the 29th megabit,New Years day is the first of Maskaram.

The victory day is in honour of Haille Selassie in 1941 is on 27 Miazia.
